What "enhance" actually does
The enhancement is a straightforward grayscale conversion followed by a contrast stretch — the same idea behind a document scanner app's "black and white" mode. It pushes light pencil marks and paper texture further apart, which tends to make handwriting easier to read and shrinks the resulting file, since a contrasty grayscale photo compresses better than a full-colour one.
It won't fix a genuinely blurry or badly lit photo — it works on what's already there rather than reconstructing detail that wasn't captured. For crooked or angled photos, Scan to PDF adds perspective correction on top of this same idea.
