How to Flip PDF
- Add your PDF. Drop the file onto the drop zone. It is read on your device and not uploaded.
- Pick an axis. Left to right mirrors across a vertical line, the usual choice. Top to bottom mirrors across a horizontal one.
- Choose which pages. Select the pages to mirror. Anything left unselected is carried through exactly as it was.

Flipping and rotating are not the same thing
They get confused constantly, and the difference is easiest to see in what happens to the text. Rotate a page 180° and the text is upside down but still reads normally when you turn the paper round. Flip it and the text reads backwards no matter which way you hold it — the page has become its own reflection.
Mathematically, a rotation preserves handedness and a reflection reverses it. Practically: if you are trying to fix a page that came out sideways or upside down, you want Rotate PDF. If you are trying to produce a mirror image on purpose, you want this.
There is a technical consequence too. Rotation in a PDF is a single number stored on the page, so rotating leaves the file's content untouched. Mirroring has no such flag — the content itself has to be redrawn through a negative scale, so a flipped document is genuinely a new file.
When you actually want a mirror image
Iron-on transfers and heat-press printing. The design is printed reversed so that it reads correctly once pressed face down onto fabric. Getting this wrong wastes both the transfer paper and the garment.
Screen printing and etching, where artwork is exposed through the back of a film or plate and has to be laid down reversed to come out the right way round.
Scans and photographs of transparencies, negatives or microfilm that were captured through the wrong side of the medium and have come back mirrored. One flip puts them right.
Documents photographed in a mirror — sometimes the only option for an awkwardly mounted or oversized original.
What survives the flip
Text remains real text rather than an image: it is drawn through a mirrored transform, so it stays selectable, searchable and sharp at any zoom. It will select and copy as normal, reading forwards in the clipboard even though it reads backwards on the page.
Vector artwork stays vector, so line weights hold up at print resolution and nothing acquires the soft edges that come from rasterising a page.
Bookmarks are kept and continue to point at the same pages. Pages you did not select pass through untouched, which means a document can be mixed — a mirrored cover for a transfer with unmirrored instructions behind it.
